This year’s event will support Vision Preservation and Restoration Initiatives at the Flaum Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Rochester Medical Center.

At 22, Emily Robbins was a new college grad who had started her first job and was training to run another marathon. Her life was upended when she was diagnosed with leukemia and had to undergo more than two years of treatment. “It’s because of the care I got from doctors and nurses at Wilmot: that’s why I’m here to tell my story,” says Emily. “Without cancer research, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Finding community and eliminating disparities
“We have to start by identifying those with greater needs or who have faced a disproportionate cancer burden for decades,” says Paula Cupertino, PhD. As associate director of Wilmot’s new Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, Cupertino is working with the community to identify research gaps and open clinical trials that will reduce cancer incidence in our region.
